The Japanese Houses That Can Resist to a 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake

Are you afraid of Earthquakes? Do you live in a high seismic area? Now Japanese people have found the ultimate solution and a way to build houses that can resist to a 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake … with no damages or casualties.

What’s an earthquake? “An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocentre, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicentre.” You can read more about earthquakes here.

This devastating natural event can happen any time, almost everywhere and can be sometimes really huge, causing a lot of damages and death. The media are full of news about tragic earthquakes happening more and more frequently (from America to Italy and India, from Indonesia to New Zealand and Japan), bringing a lot of destruction and sadness.

Although earthquakes can’t be predicted – despite all the efforts made by the scientists – we can do our best to limit or avoid damages and casualties. One of the countries that knows most earthquakes is Japan and they became experts in coping with them, saving a lot of lives every time. Now they found a way to make houses so “smart” and strong that they can resist even to a 9.0 Magnitude earthquake. That means zero  – or almost zero – death, damages and reconstruction expenses.

On this video you can see a test and how a properly designed, cheap and wooden house can suffer no consequences from a huge shake, saving millions of lives.

Would you adapt your house or build a new one based on this technology? Do you think they can be really affordable in your country?
