Do you like films and going to the cinema? What’s your genre? Do you love superhero films? Maybe you’ve already heard about and seen the new movie in theatre “Wonder Woman” and today we are going to talk about its stunning success, with over $300 million earned globally…in just 7 days.
The film was directed by Patty Jenkins, a writer/director best known for her debut feature Monster.
The protagonist heroine is Gal Gadot, an Israeli actress, martial artist, and model. Miss Israel winner in 2004, she made her film debut in the fourth film of the Fast and Furious franchise. After playing the role of Wonder Woman in the superhero team-up film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, now she is back again with the same role, but in the solo film “Wonder Woman” (2017).
Although Patty Jenkins decleared that she was sceptical about Gadot at the beginning, she changed her mind after seeing her in action. And fortunately, she was cast, because after just one week on theatre, the movie earned more than 100 million dollars only in America and more than 300 million at the global box office (according to a report from Forbes).
In a market (Hollywood) dominated by men, this is one of the highest-grossing movies ever from a female director. A really big success that, unfortunately, has to live with some issues too. The film have been banned in Lebanon because of the protagonist Gadot and her nationality: she is Israeli and ex-soldier. Lebanon’s Ministry of Economy issued the ban just before the film was scheduled to premiere in Lebanon, which is officially at war with Israel (although it’s been already promoted and scheduled to debut in the country until hours before the ban). But “the show must go on”, so let’s see how much the film will earn at the end.
